I devoured this book. It was fun, and interesting, and important, and powerful. Told from multiple POVs while trying to solve a series of homicides, the characters have great development as the plot races along. If you're looking for the romance, consider this a smolder; the sparks have not yet been fanned into flame, but the groundwork has been laid for future books. I would not say the ending is a cliffhanger, the book is just so good it leaves you wanting more (which we will be getting, yay!). Although Reece's sister has a lovely, healthy relationship to tide us over.If all you want is a great story, you've found it. I, however, came away from this book feeling how relevant and important it was as well. Here, we have someone who is an empath, and is treated like a criminal and villain by society. I have never thought of empathy as a bad thing, in fact I believe we could use a whole lot more of it. In this reality, people confuse empathy (emotions) with telepathy (thoughts), which would seem far more troubling (also, can you imagine how awful it would be to feel other peoples emotions OR hear their thoughts?). Either way, their fear makes them cruel. Restrictions are placed on empaths, who are tracked and monitored. Special gloves are required, and act as an outward marker of their 'kind'. The rest of the people Reece comes into contact with (though not literally, of course) all react with panic and cruelty. How terrifying to live where empathy is considered bad, and people lack compassion. They have an excuse to be terrible, and they are.Empaths are not born evil, are in fact the people least likely to enact evil, and are made physically ill by even the threat of violence to another. Pure pacifists. I don't want to spoil anything by saying more, but those most lacking empathy, who seek power and control, are the real villains, per usual. People who are just trying to go about their lives, not hurting anyone, are marginalized and persecuted for their differences. Sound familiar?I didn't mention Evan, but he's our biggest mystery, and I don't want to spoil his story. Hoping we get more from him in "Twisted Shadows". December 10th. Mark your calendars.Highly, highly recommend this incredible book. You will not regret it.
