Description
Following the success of Silver Ray’s Humans, released at the tail end of 2004 following the band’s UK tour supporting Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds, Broken Horse is extremely proud to release the new solo album by the Silver Ray leader/guitarist Cam Butler. Humans encountered praise almost everywhere it went (Uncut, Mojo, The Guardian, Observer etc) , but with Go Slow, Cam Butler has produced perhaps his most ambitious and greatest work to date. Cam’s debut album Crazy Dreams was released in Australia in 2003 but this time around with the help of a Victoria Arts grant he was able to realise the sounds in his head by being able to afford to hire a 20 piece string orchestra to record the string parts he had written one Sunday afternoon in March 2004. Enlisting the talents of Silver Ray’s drummer Brett Poliness, Go Slow was basically recorded live with only the strings overdubbed at the final stage of recording… ‘Whilst most of Silver Ray’s tracks hover around the ten minute mark, the tracks on Go Slow are shorter and tighter in terms of arrangement with the music finding much more of a groove such as on the title track and Brothers & Sisters. Nonetheless, epic is probably still going to be the adjective of choice when describing the music on Go Slow. Cam describes the different writing processes thus, ‘In Silver Ray I write most of the stuff first and then give it to the band and then we proceed to completely change it from how it was. My "solo" material uses pieces that wouldn't work in the Ray world, perhaps more guitar-based or more spooky things. Most of these pieces still need to be played live to see how they will work.’ Go Slow contains five Butler originals alongside the re-working of the traditional sea shanty Shenandoah.

Sometimes Australian guitarist and composer, Cam Butler makes music to "Go Slow" and other times quick and dramatic; happily; melancholic-ally; introspectively; sitting and focused; glancing in the background; or all of the aforementioned in the same track. My favorite album of this guy's is 'See (Symphony No.1)' as it has a more broad scope in composition and includes more of these variations. But this is really good, too; we're just going slower.Cam Butler, when not going 'solo', as such, is in a well-acclaimed band called 'Silver Ray' and they are similar in style and stamped with Butler's unique and considerable talent. They employ, as their nucleus, drums, piano and guitar and various stringed instruments, e.g. violin, viola, cello; with the odd friend/session musician dropping in some extras here and there. With his solo work, Mr. Butler bangs out his self-professed Neil Young inspired rustic and sweeping chords with earnestly offered, tremendously melodic solos (he has that Neil Young niche of getting a lot from one note) amongst backings of percussion, drums and stirring, epic strings- credited as being "The Shadows of Love Orchestra".Here Cam stays true to the title (which came first...?) and goes slow, with some lovely melodies and compositions that create a consistent atmosphere of...well, going slow (But nice and steady). An Awe-inspiring and tremendous work from a very talented person.
