Last year a tree fell on the transformer up the street and we were out of electricity for 2 days. It was cold, but we luckily have a gas fireplace, water heater, and stove, and it wasn't frigid cold where the pipes froze or anything. We do have gas heat but I think it triggers on with electric. Still, it was very boring. I had an old transistor radio and luckily one 9-volt battery to put in it. We tried not to overuse our cell phones because we had no way to charge them. Our garage door wouldn't open and I couldn't get in the garage to pull the manual string because I put the snowblower against the outside door (because we never use that door! Not once in 8 years! I don't put it there anymore! lol) I mean, I have family close by that would call us (landlines still work!) and would come if we really needed them. We kept thinking it would be fixed soon. I always have candles, so that was okay. We ended up playing cards and boardgames, using the gas stove, backgammon and things and it was fine. After that, I got some phone power banks and this radio. Even if it is just entertainment in an outage, it is better than nothing. I have all the emergency stuff on one shelf in our hall closet. That way, if we need it fast, we always know where it is. It would be nice to have another one of these in my car, too. I think this would even be fine just to use outside since it is solar. I do listen to the radio when I do gardening work, why not save some energy (I use rechargeable batteries, but they still take energy to charge up) with the solar? I hope I never have to use this in a real emergency. But it is nice knowing that I have it.I think that it’s a good idea to have at least one radio that doesn’t need batteries or a charger for use in an emergency.I picked this radio because it had both a crank and solar options to recharge the built-in battery. This radio works great and both the crank and solar panels will keep the radio going. In sunlight, the radio recharges quickly and plays for a long time. With the crank, several revolutions is enough for a couple of minutes. The radio is compact and sturdy enough. I hope I never need to use it for real.I really wanted this product to work out. It looks awesome and feels great. The crank works in that it is able to power the radio and flash light. However, there is a major defect in my product. It has no capability to store power. In that I mean that this device must be cranked 24/7 to power any of the attributes. Cranking it for one minute does not allow the light to power on for an extended amount of time. I can use mine also if I leave it plugged into the wall. This is just super inconvenient and doesn't amount to the 'emergency' aspect it's intended for. I could have received a faulty product, but I have not been in contact with the company.Fast changing weather, important to be aware.
