Opus 2, after his stylistically wide-ranging debut, settles into the gentle, melodic side with happy improvisations on works of some other composers. He has the same band members [Paul Nagel, piano; John Shifflett, bass; Jason Lewis, drums] and Bud Spangler again is co-producer. Schwartz presents pieces by Wayne Shorter; Benny Golson; Billy Strayhorn; Mel Trome; Harold Arlen; plus five of his own. His Peace Dollar is inspired by and honors Abdullah Ibrahim, formerly known as Dollar Brand. The Slow Lane, the album title, belies the driving rhythms of The Curve of the Earth or forceful blues of Don't Ask; the somewhat slower tempos allow focus on tone, expression, and improvisational space, but the works are far from sluggish ballads. The generous 70 minutes of music present fine arrangements and well-performed studies of some familiar tunes. While slightly less satisfying than When Music Calls, this new album allows closer scrutiny, and admiration, of the saxophone art of Schwartz.
